Minted by Southern Cross Bullion, an Australian private mint located at Bayswater, Victoria State. The design on the reverse commemorates the Eureka flag which first flew during the Battle of the Eureka Stockade in 1854.
The battle stemmed from arguments between miners and the government over gold mining rights and licensing taxes in Ballarat Victoria. This culminated with the miners clashing with police and soldiers in the early hours of Sunday, 3 December 1854. The battle resulted in the deaths of 27 miners. The subsequent public outrage over the use of excessive force by government forces led to a Commission of Enquiry. This saw the abolishment of Β gold licenses in favour of annual minersβ rights.
This was seen as many as the birth of democracy in Australia and widely acknowledged as an important event in the nationβs history. Southern Cross Bullion commemorate the Battle of the Eureka Stokade and Eureka flag with this elegant silver bar.
